Abstract

This paper analyses the spatial pattern, locational characteristics and periodicity of market centres in the eleven local government areas of Gombe State, Nigeria. The 103 market centres which formed the samples for the study were drawn based on the National Population Commission census of 1996 and projected to 2017. Coordinates of the 103 periodic market centres were obtained using Gamming GPS device. ArcGIS 10.5 was used to analyse and map out the location of the market centres across the state. Buffer and Near Feature Tool were used to determine market areas of each market centre from which customers are drawn. The study revealed that while Balanga Local Government Area has 18 (17.48%) of the 103 periodic markets, Shongom Local Government Area has only 4 (3.88%). Contrarily Gombe Local Government Area was found to have high density of market centres (1.81km/sq km) and a very high threshold drawing customers from all over the state and beyond. Analysis of periodicity of market centres revealed that most markets in the state hold on Tuesdays 17 (17.35%). Gombe State has on the average market density of 0.2km/sq km(9.09%) while the result of 5km Buffer distance to market centres showed a total land area of 17,259.79sqkm out of which only 6239.93sqkm (36.15%) are accessible within 5km range. It is recommended that the State regional planning programme considers establishing more market centres in areas with very low market centre density as population increases. In addition transport infrastructure in the state should be improved. Both recommendations will enhance trade and pave way for economic development in the state.
